One of the most popular tourist spots in Iceland are the black sand beaches near Vík. In particular, Reynisfjara beach has become exceedingly popular, to the point that some have speculated that it is the inspiration behind a location in Frozen 2. However, many Icelanders think this amount of attention is far from a good thing. What the people pictured above likely don’t know is that someone died from the very waves they are playing with as recently as November, and at least four people have died in the last decade at Reynisfjara. When the waves there are particularly volatile, sometimes a ‘sneaker wave’ will approach without warning, threating to drag the unaware out into the freezing Atlantic. Icelanders are tough people, used to extremely cold conditions, intense storms, and even volcanic eruptions. Icelanders understand how deadly nature can be. As a result, there is very little idiot-proofing in Iceland, which means tourists may underestimate the danger of beautiful locations such as Reynisfjara. Moral of the story? Don’t run with scissors. The national bird of Iceland is the Puffin – the penguin’s smaller but flight-capable cousin. If you visit Iceland in winter you won’t see a single one of these little orange bird anywhere, as they migrate to the mid/southern-Atlantic to feed. Someone you’re more likely to encounter, year-round, is the Hrafn – or the raven. Ravens in Iceland, and Norse countries in general, have a mythological and historical significance. Ravens serve as messengers of Odin, bringing omens of death or misfortune. In terms of history, Iceland is believed to have been completely uninhabited by humans until the settlement age (roughly 870 AD). The island was first accidentally encountered by a viking named Naddod sometime before 870. Later, another man named Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson became the first man to intentionally sail for the newly discovered landmass. Setting out from the Faroe Islands, he sent out three ravens to sea. One flew back towards the Faroe islands and didn’t return. One came back to the ship. And another flew to the Northwest, guiding Hrafna-Flóki to Iceland. He stayed at the island for some time and eventually gave it the name it has today – Iceland. So, you might say that the Raven gave Iceland its name, something the Puffin cannot claim.
