A story of intertwinement, obsessiveness, and the delicate nature of complex love: the sun never sets in the world “Killing Eve.” The story follows the tumultuous story of a security operative Eve Polastri, played by Sandra Oh, and a deadly assassin Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer, as they play an inextricable game of cat and mouse all over the globe. The BBC TV show, now on Netflix, is based off of Luke Jennings’ thriller novel “Codename Villanelle,” published in 2017. This convoluted tale of a woman, Eve, stuck in a monotonous, gray life who becomes obsessed with catching Villanelle, a mysterious, almost invisible, assassin that travels the world killing for a higher up power. With thrill, mystery, action, comedy, and exploration of sapphic and queer identities, this show encompasses an addicting story that traverses deeper, more relevant social topics. “Killing Eve” has four seasons, with 32 episodes in total, and every second of it is attention-absorbing. Without a doubt, “Killing Eve” is a gem in the Netflix catalog.
Those in shiny armor, elaborate gowns, and bloodied uniforms serve to educate, entertain, and enlighten the viewer of a historical drama. A group of five gawky 90s teenagers in Catholic school uniforms can achieve the same effect. Netflix’s “Derry Girls” takes place in Londonderry of Northern Ireland, during what the British call “The Troubles”— violent conflicts between Roman Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists from 1968- 98. With the teens’ scrunchies and jean jackets, this sitcom regularly incorporates real historical events and happenings, while still centering on the lives of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), Claire (Nicola Coughlan), and James (Dylan Llewellyn). Although many of these real world events contain heavy topics, the episodic plot of the show is lighthearted from the perspective of teenagers. Whether it is Erin fighting with her Ma or Claire worrying about her grades, this show is full of humorous teen activities.
The brand new, attention- grabbing thriller “Time Cut” is an action-packed movie of love, sacrifice, discovery, and murder. Starring Madison Bailey, Antonia Gentry and Griffin Gluck, the story follows Lucy Field, a teen in 2024 who is haunted by her late sister’s murder. On the anniversary of her sister’s death, Field accidentally travels back in time to the year 2003, three days before the masked killer commits life altering crimes. She must fight against the clock to save her older sister and catch the murderer, but only time will tell. Within only 1 hour, 31 minutes, Field goes on a history changing journey to thwart the killer’s plans in attempts to protect her sister and possibly change the course of time. With classic horror elements, a thematic soundtrack pulling on both modern and 2000s music, and a relatable script for a wide range of ages, this movie encompasses both time periods and a thrilling storyline without a dull moment. “Time Cut” is the perfect late-night watch with an abudance of suspense and its never-ending twists and turns.
For people who enjoy the good cop, bad cop dynamic, “White Collar” is the perfect show. Between committing crimes and solving them, Neal Caffery (Matt Bomer) reluctantly teams up with FBI investigator Peter Burke (Tim Dekay) of the white-collar division. Burke spent the better half of a decade trying to catch Caffery as he forged and charmed his way through museums, heists, cons, and lost treasures. Now, as a form of probation, Caffery must help Burke solve the same type of crimes he once committed. Caffery and his best friend Mozzie’s unconventional, and oftentimes perilous, methods are thrillingly addictive to watch. With insider knowledge of the criminal community, Caffery struggles with his instincts to steal while still begrudgingly caring for the agents he assists. Although lengthy—with an 80 episode run —“White Collar” has episodic plot lines, providing quick and easily binge-worthy arcs while exploring captivating twists and high-stakes situations that leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
