Just outside of Room 281 the laughter and conversations of kids can be heard as they work together to design the logo that will be placed on the Art Club t-shirts for the year. This year they plan to do many activities: pumpkin carving, tote bag painting, and flower pot painting.
Club co-presidents Morgan Messerschmitt and Emma Vernon work to create a welcoming environment for anyone who wants to come, talented or not.
“I want people to know that they can be creative and not have to be an artist to make art,” Messerschmitt told Spark. “I want to foster art in others and [make them] interested.”
Club advisor Emily Edwards teaches art at the East Freshman Building and thinks that Art Club is a great way to get people to express themselves. “Here we really try to build art-minded people,” said Edwards. Art Club has had a big impact on Ryan Nicolai, who just started coming this year.
“Art club has given many students the freedom to be themselves with colors, shapes, and designs,” said Nicolai.”
Nicolai said that he enjoys the camaraderie despite not being artsy himself.
“It’s a great way to express yourself as a person. A lot of things that can’t be said through voice but imagery and activism can be shown through art,” said Nicolai.
