As COVID raged on, two high school girls in New Jersey found themselves stuck. Watching how the separation was affecting senior citizens they decided to take action. Letters for Rose (LFR), an international organization, was then born, through love and hard work. LFR helps combat loneliness and connect seniors with teens.
Arriving at East three years ago, the club is led by president Ella Jo Wright, and two co-presidents Audrey Youngblood and Vicky Jiang.
Every Wednesday after school around 15 people gather in Sarah Dennis-Miller’s, room 126. After this, cards start to get made. Pens, paper, and markers are pulled out, as people begin to write inspiring messages, connecting questions, and heart-warming pictures. For each card made, members receive one hour of community service.
Wright told Spark, “[the club] was exceedingly easy to jump into.”
Last year 789 cards were created; these cards were then donated to Doverwood, Chesterwood Village, Liberty Place Memory Care, and Ohio Living Mount Pleasant. With only an hour of work a card can brighten the day of a senior citizen, Wright said.
Dennis-Miller finds her role as advisor very fulfilling.
“It’s sweet to hear them enjoying their time together and sharing what they wrote, and praising each other’s artwork,” Dennis told Spark.
