With millions of young adults graduating this year, and the majority heading off to college, one of the main concerns that interrupts all the excitement is money. Incoming college students need at least a couple thousands of dollars in order to attend college, but where is that money coming from?
Some are lucky enough to have the money saved up or handed down to them. But those who need more financial aid are assisted by the Department of Education in order to help put them through college. Although, recently President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a project in order to dismantle the Department of Education.
“President Trump has been expected to issue an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to start the process of dissolving the agency,” CBS News article states, “although the timing of such a move is unclear. According to the Education Department, the agency’s workforce is being slashed from 4,133 workers to about 2,183.”
Without the department of education, students who require financial aid will not be able to attend college or be in severe debt. This department distributes millions of student loans every year, operates FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and operates the Pell grant system which provides lower- or middle-class students with about $7,000 per year.
It is anything but fair that these incoming college students would not be able to attend school this upcoming fall because the system that was supposed to provide them with help was corrupted.
In a recent news article, USA Today says, “ the Federal Student Aid office, which Trump has proposed relocating to the Small Business Administration, lost key staff members to Tuesday’s layoffs and buyouts. Those departures could have ripple effects that impact students, according to career staffers and student advocates.”
It is a scary and unjust world that we live in but taking away the access to a possible education for students who are less fortunate than others and have to rely on the government systems who are supposed to provide help to the citizens of America will not do any good.
“Federal education money is central to Trump’s plans for colleges and schools,” NBC mentioned, “Trump has vowed to cut off federal money for schools and colleges that push “critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content” and to reward states and schools that end teacher tenure and support universal school choice programs.”
It would be no surprise back in the day if the money that is supposed to be provided to those in need is getting cut from schools just because of the controversial topics they teach, but in 2025 it is disappointing to learn that some of our world leaders value money over their own people’s education.
